Coranth

Before the Wars, Coranth was the greatest Kingdom in the Realms. The only reason it still exists is in great part due to the efforts of Master Dryden, his mentor Cirys of Locria, and the many other great mancers who were killed during the last days of the Wars.

The land of Coranth today is harsh, wind-bitten, and wild. The people have adapted to the land, and they are as tough as the sea-cliffs by the oceans (as yet unnamed, as is much of the Realms.) The mountainous regions of Coranth are filled with both dwarves and orcs, and the human inhabitants are quite content to stay to the coast and the flatlands.

This was not always so. Coranth used to be almost four times its current size. It composed all of Marandall, much of the Dead Mountains (see note), and the area known as Greater Coranth, a fertile area that holds the fountainhead of the river that drains into Lake Marandall. It is surrounded by mountains and was once colonized by the Elves in the early days soon after the Sidhe had withdrawn. Great forests thrived there and the soil was fertile enough to sustain generations of farming. It would be a wonderful place to live if it hadn't been swarmed by Goblin-kind after the last days of the Wars left Men and Elves too caught up in their own affairs to prevent it.

The Closing of the Pass to Greater Coranth:

When the king of Coranth after the Wars realized that Greater Coranth had been lost to the Goblin-kind, in desperation he called on one of the few surviving mancers for help. This Geomancer had been grievously injured during the Wars and was living as a hidden refugee in the Court of Coranth because of the price on his head. The king knew that he would draw fire for his actions in taking in the wounded fugitive, but he did so anyway- that's the kind of guy he was. The Geomancer, Cirys of Locria, used the very last of his strength to call up a great mountain to block the pass to Greater Coranth. The Goblin-kind lost their easy route to Coranth and were stymied for a long while as to an easy way to attack Coranth. Cirys died after the mountain was raised, and the king buried him in honor without ever telling anyone just how in the hell that mountain got there. Even though everyone knew it was mancer work, they never knew who the mancer was who had raised the mountain and blocked the pass.

The Dead Mountains:

Nothing grows in the Dead Mountains. The entire area was devastated during the wars and the land has still not healed. There is a large area in the mountains that is called the Devastated Territory because it was so infused with destructive magics and twisted in with other planes that the very fabric of reality is distorted there. Nothing can survive in the Devastated Territory- only the gods know what could be spawned in such a place. The common prejudiced myth is that mancers come from areas like the territory, even though that's not true at all.

It is also rumored that these devastated lands are where the Hollow Ones are spawned- this rumor is much more likely.
